...later called the OIPC, got started in April 2007
In April of 2007, concerned individuals and organizational representatives met to assess the the opportunities to develop a more effective response to the growing threat of invasive terrestrial plant species. The group acknowledged from the outset of the meeting that while there is a good effort being made to deal with invasive aquatic plants, there needs to be a comparative effort on the terrestrial front. The meeting produced a commitment to form the Ontario Invasive Plant Council, and the group identified a set of principles and 6 priority actions. the meeting notes in pdf format are available from the OIPC archives.
The group met again on June 14, 2007 to discuss the concepts that needed to be elaborated on related to the mission, the structure of the group and the short term and medium term next steps.
The inaugural annual general meeting of the OIPC was held for the larger group of interested individuals and organizations on October 26. It was hosted by the Royal Botanical Gardens...one of the original lead members of the OIPC.
The Stewardship Network of Ontario (SNO) was quick to support the OIPC by setting up and managing web pages for the OIPC within the SNO website. That arrangement continued until the fall of 2009, when OIPC developed its own separate website.
